Harley-Davidson : XR 1200

HARLEY-DAVIDSON PROTOTYPE DEBUTS AT INTERMOT

Cologne, Germany (October 10, 2006) - Harley-Davidson revealed a prototype Sportster XR 1200 motorcycle aimed at the European market today at the INTERMOT International Motorcycle Show in Cologne, Germany. The XR 1200 prototype places an emphasis on performance and handling with styling inspired by the Motor Company's legendary XR 750 dirt track racer.

Created with the demands of the European market in mind, the XR 1200 prototype's development goals include a powerful air-cooled V-Twin engine, agile handling, and high performance suspension and brakes.

"As Harley-Davidson seeks to further grow its presence and sales in Europe, INTERMOT and subsequent major European events will be used to carefully evaluate media and public reaction to the XR 1200 prototype," said John Russell, Vice President, Harley-Davidson Europe. "If the prototype is well received, we hope to bring the XR 1200 to Europe in 2007."

The Sportster XR 1200 Prototype features:
- XR 750-inspired styling
- 1200cc air-cooled V-Twin with downdraft fuel injection (85-90 HP target)
- Specially tuned Showa suspension with 43mm inverted front forks
- High performance four-piston caliper Nissin brakes
- Unique lightweight cast wheels with dirt track-inspired design

Specially developed Dunlop Qualifier tires:
Front 120/70ZR18
Rear 180/55ZR17

Harley Davidson, a brand which become a legend, not only in US but also in entire world. The history 1 of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle began in Milwaukee in 1903. This motorcycle was initially built for racing and was powered by a one-cylinder gasoline combustion engine. Later that year the first Harley-Davidson dealership, C.H. Lang of Chicago, opened and sold one of three motorcycles manufactured that year. In 1906, due to increasing demands and need for a larger facility to fabricate their motorcycles, Harley-Davidson moved to a new factory measuring just 28×80 feet on Juneau Ave. Along with this expansion came more jobs. By now Harley-Davidson employed 6 full-time employees. Also this year the first Company catalogue was produced and distributed. In 1907, some big advances took place. The Harley-Davidson Motor Company was incorporated on September 17th, 1907, and the number of employees increased to a healthy 18. The size of the factory also doubled.

In the end of 2008, The Harley Davidson released motorcycle sportster platform in Europe which called as Harley-Davidson Sportster XR1200. But it didn't take Harley long to mend its ways and announce the release of the XR1200 in the U.S at early 2009, the company is banking on the enthusiasm of the hardcore nostalgic motorcycle fans.

The Harley-Davidson Sportster XR1200, listed with an MSRP of $11,179, wears a brawny 90 horsepower, air-cooled V-twin, beefy brakes, and a dry weight of 551 lbs. Many costumer has said that the Sportsters, for the most part, don't quite convey as much bravado as a Dyna or Road Glide.


The 2009 Harley-Davidson Sportster XR1200 injects some steroids into the lineup with a more powerful engine and aggressive suspension setup. Starting with the traditional air-cooled pushrod 1,200 cc V-twin, Harley has bumped the compression ratio to 10:1, added performance cams, precision-cooled cylinder heads, a large capacity oil cooler and downdraft electronic fuel injection.


The combination of quality rubber, lightened rolling inertia courtesy the wheels, 59-inch wheelbase and stout fork, the Harley-Davidson Sportster XR1200 turns in easily and stays on target all the way through your chosen corner arc with stability and confidence. The Harley-Davidson Sportster XR1200 available in three colors :


Actually, the Harley-Davidson Sportster XR 1200 is based on race-winning XR 750 dirt trackers that were popularized, ironically, on U.S. soil. It's designed to fit the average height European customer, but we can't help but wonder if this market-specific model would ever be modified for sale in North America.

The XR1200's Nissin brakes are significantly upgraded from standard-issue Sportsters, with four-piston 292 mm dual discs up front and a single-piston 260 mm disc at the rear. In running order, the Harley-Davidson Sportster XR 1200 tips the scales at 580 pounds. These brakes are nothing short of spectacular and should be grasped with caution should you take advantage of an XR 1200 demo ride and are expecting the usual Harley brake.


If you see the instruments on the Harley-Davidson Sportster XR 1200 are minimal. Watching the needle bounce around on the good-sized, round, white-faced tach is what you’ll mainly see. A compact digital speedo on Sportster XR 1200 body is centered next to it on the handlebars and the digital display makes it easy to know exactly how fast you’re going. A dual trip meter and clock have been thrown in for good measure.

MCN overall verdict
Based on the 2009 XR1200, the XR1200X is slightly more sports biased than the sports biased XR1200. Confused? Don’t be. All you have to think about is the X-model has vastly improved, multi-adjustable suspension that makes a difference when riding 187kg of American muscle on our roads. It also comes in a menacing black paint scheme with black exhausts. Engine spec remains the same as the XR1200. Just remember Harley’s idea of sports bike performance is nothing like a 600-1000cc sports machine produced in the past 20 years.

The air-cooled 1202cc is all torque – 74ftlb of it – with not a lot more horsepower to top off the lowdown punt, but then it is based on the 1200 Sportster but with higher compression and upswept, high volume 2:1:2 exhausts (see XR1200 review for full details).

Ride and Handling
The addition of Showa pig piston forks and piggyback shocks puts the accomplished XR1200 onto another rung of the handling ladder. There’s a lot more feedback from front and rear wheels and the front end feels considerably more settled on the brakes. At the same time it is supple enough to rubbish the Queen’s crumbling highways. This means you can actually wring every last drop of performance from the XR1200X and make use of it. Or simply enjoy the slow revving nature of the bike with an improved, polished even, ride quality.



Quality and Reliability
The Harley-Davidson chassis range is slowly but surely getting updated. Better brakes and suspension figure highly, as per the XR1200 and XR1200X. But somewhere along the line H-D have forgotten about the simple things like why is the clutch cable flapping in the breeze; why are the footpegs and foot controls so chunky-ugly yet so loose, and so on?

BIG NICKEL BIG HARLEY-DAVIDSON WOMEN’S EVENT!

Ever heard of Sudbury? It’s a Northern city in Ontario, and rather famous as it’s known for its nickel mines. Here you'll also find the worlds largest Nickel—a huge tourist attraction and must see! Sudbury is also the home of one of Ontario's premier Harley-Davidson dealerships called “The Shop”. A few months back I travelled to the "Great white North" as Canadians often jest, Sudbury, to take part in their grand opening ladies garage party (forgive me for not sharing earlier, its been crazy busy at my desk!) --a terrific event, regardless of the freezing rain which unexpectedly arrived that morning!

The women rider authorities of Deeley Harley-Davidson were in attendance—all of us bringing our enthusiasm and experiences to share with the hundreds of women attending (View Photo Gallery)—looking to get themselves into the life of motorcycling this year!
The Shop was a Harley-Davidson force unto itself-you don't see too many dealerships of this size. Amidst the Garage Party buzz of activities, and goings on I had the pleasure of hearing first hand from son Erik, the history of this "Kanerva" family business--"The Shop's" humble beginnings to now mega motorcycling enterprise. What a terrific journey they’ve enjoyed--most certainly one to be very proud of.

So if you’re visiting Ontario and head up to Sudbury, indeed, stop by The Shop and say hello! I guarantee you won’t be able to leave without buying something--they have it all!
Oh and if you’re lucky enough to use the upstairs bathroom you’ll enjoy washing your hands under a highly polished steel/chrome motorcycle tank with handlebar faucets!
